We planted our vines in 2008 on a sun-exposed Southwest facing slope at an altitude of 300 meters. We learned about the strong Umbrian sun, the dry wind brought by the scirocco and the mud. Lots of mud. We were helped by our Tuscan agronomist and enologist who were curious to see what the Umbrian soil could produce. Pensioners, village moms, and teenagers hiked into the vineyard with us with buckets and a pair of shears to harvest our crop. That’s how we’ve done it since the start and that’s how we keep doing it.

The hard, mineral-rich Umbrian soil gifted us delicious fruit. We brought it into our cantina and carefully let it develop. We sorted by hand, squeezed the fruit, and let it bubble in the tanks. The juice picked up the natural yeast that has been in the air for generations. We punched down the skins and let them rise again. Our fall was (and still is) a dedicated and delicate play with our grapes.

And then we bottled. Baptized each with names that came from local dialect: Cinino (“Tiny One”), Pottarello (“Little kid”) and Marmocchio (“Rascal”). Seemed like a good fit. We’ve created some delicious wines and are part of the new Todi DOC Appellation. We couldn’t be happier.

Agri Segretum Gift Boxes

Cheers, Happy Holidays and Cin, Cin!

We’ve found a small company in Perugia to make up our Agri Segretum wooden boxes. We wrap and pack the bottles by hand here in Collazzone and ship directly to you or a friend for any special occasion. Absolutely bellissime. Let us know and we’ll add in a card.
Options include our “Vino d’Oro” Pottarello, our elegant DOC Marmocchio, and our small quantity Cru HTH. Cru HTH is our newest red. Back in 2012 we set aside an oak barrel for the choicest Sagrantino grapes of the harvest. Sagrantino is Umbria’s iconic tannic red. She needs 7 years of quiet to age and balance her tannins: when the wine is ready it is an intense, deep red that you can only find in Umbria.

Marmocchio

TODI DOC SANGIOVESE ORGANIC

Marmocchio translates into “rascal” in Italian. Created from Sangiovese Grosso (85%) and Sagrantino (15%), picked and carefully selected by hand from vineyard rows 110-148. Sagrantino (Umbria’s indigenous ancient grape) and Sangiovese Grosso grapes reach full maturity at different times of harvest, so the two varieties are picked independently. Alcoholic fermentation by maceration and extraction occur in stainless steel tanks over a 30 day period, when we perform the manual follatura (punch down) three times a day for best extraction. After separation of skins, the finished wine is transferred into tonneaux (500 liter/150 gallon French oak barrels) for 15 to 18 months before resting another 15 months in the bottle.
This is a full-bodied red wine, dark ruby red in color, with an important structure, rich tannins and hints of ripe dark berries. Marmocchio is our most elegant taste of Umbria.
Current release 2017 vintage: 2500 bottles produced.

Pottarello

VERONELLI VINO D’ORO 2021

Pottarello translates into “little kid” in Umbrian dialect. It’s a mix of Sangiovese (80%), Malvasia Nera (10%) and Colorino (10%). The Sangiovese used in Pottarello is picked from vineyard rows 46 to 75, where the biotype is particularly thin clustered and with much smaller berries than those of its more common Sangiovese siblings. Smaller berries mean more skin, which translates into more extraction of color and polyphenols. The wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and remains in contact with skins for about 3 weeks. It’s during this time that we perform the classic manual follatura, (punch downs), by mixing and stirring of juice and skin). After separation of skins, the finished wine is transferred into tonneaux (500 litre/150 gallon French oak barrels), where it ages for about 12 months before resting another 9 months in bottle. Classified as Todi DOC Rosso, Pottarello is the very essence of Umbria, squeezed into a bottle.
This is a full-bodied wine, the Sangiovese provides structure and tannin, the Malvasia adds notes of wild berries and the Colorino just a hint of spice.
Current release 2018 vintage: 6,578 bottles produced.

Freghino 1 Liter

UMBRIA ROSSO IGT ORGANIC

Our Freghino is bottled as a larger 1 liter bottle.
Umbrian dialect for “teenager”, Freghino is our classic everyday wine and perfect by-the-glass. Once opened, our 1 liter can sit happily on your shelf for at least a week. It’s a lighter blend of Sangiovese (70%), Colorino (20%) and Malavasia Nera (10%) grapes, hand picked during mid harvest. The grapes perform alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After 9 days of maceration on its skins, the wine continues ageing in stainless steel before its release about 9 months later. Freghino is still true to it’s Sangiovese roots, but the addition of Malvasia and Colorino make a lighter, easy drinking red.
Medium-bodied, with wild berries and medium tannins.
Current release 2022 vintage.
Please contact us here for a quotation to ship Freghino to your home.
